Au XVIIe siècle et surtout après la révocation de l’édit de Nantes en 1685, les Calvinistes français ou Huguenots, se réfugient dans les pays protestants d’Europe du Nord. Le groupe des négociants s’installe dans les grands centres commerciaux notamment les ports où leur intégration est plus ou moins grande selon les pays d’accueil.
