Keynote : Richard Ansell (Birbeck, University of London), Sociability and Service on the Road in 18th-century Europe

The aim of this workshop is to study the sociability practices of travellers during the long eighteenth century and their perceptions of these practices in a foreign context by drawing on any types of written testimonies or material culture relating to travel. 

During their travels undertaken for a wide variety of reasons, travellers regardless of their gender, age, class, origin had to interact with the Other and the unknown. The documents held in The National Archives’ collections that may be used for this seminar will provide an opportunity to question the ways in which travellers perceived foreign societies, and how they reacted to the practices of sociability of the Other, whether or not they accepted to comply with them. 

This workshop is part of the activities of the “Sociability and Travel” strand of the GIS Sociabilités. It is jointly organised by two research centres - ILCEA4 (Grenoble Alpes University), Pléiade (Sorbonne Paris Nord University) - and The National Archives (Kew).

De la sociabilité des voyageurs dans les collections de The National Archives – 20 mars 2026, TNA (Kew)

L’objectif de ce séminaire est d’étudier les pratiques de sociabilité des voyageurs durant le long dix-huitième siècle et leurs rapports avec celles-ci dans un contexte étranger pour eux, par les témoignages écrits, sous toutes leurs formes, ainsi que la culture matérielle ayant trait au voyage.

À l’occasion de leur déplacement, les voyageurs, quel que soit leur genre, leur âge, leur classe sociale, leur origine et les raisons de leur voyage, se sont retrouvés confrontés à l’Autre, l’inconnu, avec qui ils devaient interagir. Les documents des collections des Archives Nationales qui pourront être utilisés seront l’occasion d’interroger les modalités d’observation des sociétés par les voyageurs, ainsi que leur confrontation aux pratiques de sociabilité de l’Autre auxquelles les voyageurs acceptèrent ou pas de participer. 

Ce séminaire s’inscrit dans le cadre des activités de l’axe « Sociabilité et voyage » du GIS Sociabilités. Il est organisé conjointement par les laboratoires ILCEA4 (Université Grenoble Alpes), Pléiade (Université Sorbonne Paris Nord) et The National Archives (Kew).
