… stunted, it is clear that his position in the art world allowed him to develop an extraordinary range of acquaintance. Reading Farington’s diary today, the word that springs to mind to describe much of its content is ‘gossip’. It seems … an extraordinary resource for students of the thirty years after 1793 but, like many such resources, it needs attentive reading if we are to understand the underlying currents that shaped the sociability of their writers.
